UWO kicks off the 2010 campaign
Over 125 guests, supporters and local business leaders joined United Way of Oakville as they kicked off the 2010 campaign with a goal announcement of $3,600,000.
This year’s UWO campaign theme is LIVE UNITED. “This isn’t a catchy phrase,” says Mary Cardamone, 2010 Campaign Cabinet Chair. “It’s a call to action. Oakville is a great place to live, but it needs to be a great place for everyone to live. We need to work together to make sure our agencies have the resources and funding to help the people in Oakville who need it – isolated seniors, children who go to school hungry and individuals living in abusive situations. It is our Town and we are in this together. I am confident that if we can all LIVE UNITED we will reach and succeed our goal.”
The event featured presentations by Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and CEO of Sheridan College; Mark Zimny, President and founder of ProMation Engineering; John Wilson, Executive Director of Community Living Oakville, a UWO funded agency; and Hans Schonrock, a recipient of service at Community Living Oakville. Each speaker discussed how they LIVE UNITED and encouraged others to do the same.
“We are asking everyone in Oakville to LIVE UNITED this year and donate to United Way,” said Cardamone. “We all win when children are no longer living in poverty, when people are healthy, and when families are strong.”
The 2010 UWO campaign will run until December 8, 2010.

Non profit agencies struggling
The non-profit agencies that serve the poor, homeless, sick and struggling knew the darkest days would come after the recession. They predicted a year ago, when economic activity was at its nadir, that 2010 would be worse than 2009.
They were right. A survey of 311 charities and voluntary organizations conducted this spring by the Social Planning Network of Ontario showed that demand for services — everything from food assistance to suicide counseling — is still rising while donations dwindle.

Poverty in Halton
"My family and I live in Poverty"
Halton residents are Canada’s third-highest income earners, but that’s cold comfort for those struggling to make ends meet.
“Poverty affects more and more people every day. No one is above it and no one is immune to it,” Chrystal Orvis told Halton’s Health and Social Services Committee on Tuesday (July 6).
Orvis was among 15 local witnesses whose poverty experiences were recorded recently at Halton Social Audit hearings in Georgetown and Oakville.
